The first issue of USA Today — Sept. 15, 1982 (Newseum Collection)

The first issue of USA Today, the national daily published by the Gannett Company, rolled off the presses 32 years ago, on Sept. 15, 1982. Founded by Al Neuharth, it introduced a colorful new look for print newspapers and is No. 1 in daily circulation among U.S. newspapers.

The choice to lead the front page with the death of Princess Grace of Monaco, instead of the assassination of Lebanon’s president-elect Bashir Gemayel, established USA Today as a source of news that reflected readers’ interests.
