Teachers check in at the 2014 Open House.

Teachers, please join us Saturday, Oct. 3, for our sixth annual Teacher Open House. It’s an event you won’t want to miss — and it’s free.

Don’t be scared off by the rain. The event will take place rain or shine — and stay dry by using the on-site pay parking garage.

During the daylong event (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.), you’ll be able to participate in Newseum classes, programs, tours and curatorial sessions. This year, alumni from our summer teacher institutes will share how to incorporate digital tools into the learning process. Plus, you’ll get  tips for planning a field trip and how to bring the Newseum’s extensive online resources into your classroom.

As always, there will be refreshments, a tote bag of classroom resources, chances to win door prizes and discounts in our Newseum store and food section.

“Teacher Open House is a great opportunity to meet other educators and share experiences,” says Diane Johnson, who attended last year.

A bonus this year will be the roll-out of the redesigned NewseumED website and our new 9/11 online module.

Teacher Open House is free for teachers and tour operators, with valid IDs*; discounted $11 admission for up to five guests. (Guests do not get access to the day’s special programming.) RSVP and you’ll be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate to The Source, Wolfgang Puck’s famous restaurant in the Newseum building. Pre-registration is recommended, to speed up the check-in process, but not required.

Margaret Carpenter, who also attended last year, notes: “It is a FABULOUS event! I loved all the sessions. The presenters do know the audience and engage us as educators. The freebies and refreshments are so kind and thoughtful! It’s the day I’m thankful I became a teacher-librarian!”

The Comfort Inn in Washington is offering a special rate to teachers coming to town for the open house. Follow this link to book.

We hope to see you there!

* Valid teacher ID required to receive free admission and to participate in programs. Must be a current teacher, principal, counselor, librarian, school district level staff or college professor.
