On Monday, June 6, at 10 a.m., the Newseum will rededicate its Journalists Memorial, which recognizes men and women who died or were killed while reporting the news. The names of 20 journalists will be added to the memorial to represent all those who died in pursuit of the news in 2015.

Gérard Araud, ambassador of France to the United States, will deliver keynote remarks during the ceremony. The largest single attack on journalists in 2015 took place at the offices of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris.

With this year’s addition of 20 journalists, the memorial will bear the names of 2,291 reporters, photographers, broadcasters and news executives from around the world, dating back to 1837. A complete list of the journalists being recognized this year can be found here.

The Newseum dedicated the Journalists Memorial on April 4, 2008, one week before the Newseum’s grand opening on Pennsylvania Avenue. A previous memorial was displayed in Freedom Park at the Newseum’s former site in Arlington, Va.

  1. To Whom It May Concern:

My father, Ed Koterba, was among the first journalists to be recognized during the first dedication ceremony (1996) in Arlington, Va. I have recently authored a book about my father’s life and career, featuring many of his articles, entitled The Essential Ed Koterba: “A Most Outstanding Newspaperman” (quote from President Kennedy’s eulogy). I would like to submit a complementary copy of the book to the Newseum. Please refer me to the appropriate contact person to whom I should submit my book.

    • Mr. Morgret,

The Newseum’s library would be honored to accept your book. Please feel free to send it to our library manager:
