Artist and Activist Ai Weiwei’s Self Portrait On Display at Newseum

Installation is part of exhibit at Hirshhorn Museum

Ai Weiwei, a provocative Chinese artist and activist, has created an exhibit “Ai Weiwei: Trace at Hirshhorn” entirely out of LEGO® bricks. Using the plastic blocks, Ai WeiWei portrays 176 activists, prisoners of conscience and free speech advocates from more than 30 countries. The colorful, playful material of the LEGOs represents a sense of freedom for the significant individuals that Ai Weiwei has chosen for this exhibit.

Ai Weiwei’s self portrait is now on display in The New York Times Great Hall. Using LEGOs  in black, white, and shades of gray, Ai Weiwei portrays himself in “Self-Portrait in Lego,” 2017.

“Ai Weiwei: Trace at Hirshhorn” is on display through Jan. 1, 2018.
