‘Rise Up’ Program Series Continues March 18 with Alan Cumming

On Monday, March 18, Cumming will talk about the role of popular culture in the modern gay rights movement.

The Newseum will unveil its latest exhibit, “Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement,” on Friday, March 8. This exhibit marks the 50th anniversary of a June 1969 police raid of the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village.

“Rise Up” seeks to uncover the events that took place at the Stonewall Inn and the resulting 50-year fight for civil rights for LGBTQ Americans. The exhibit will also explore popular culture’s role in influencing attitudes about the LGBTQ community through film, television and music.

On Monday, March 18, the Newseum continues its yearlong program series featuring journalists, authors, politicians and other newsmakers who have led the fight for equality with “Rise Up: An Evening with Alan Cumming.”

Cumming, an award-winning actor, singer, producer, director and activist, will discuss his own social activism and current issues facing the LGBTQ community. He will also talk about the role of popular culture in the modern gay rights movement. Ari Shapiro, co-host of NPR’s “All Things Considered,” will moderate the conversation.

This program is included with Newseum membership. A VIP reception will follow the program. To learn how you can attend this function, please contact Cecelia Cizek at 202/292-6557 or ccizek@newseum.org.

Last year, the program series launched with “Rise Up: Politics and the Gay Rights Movement,” a conversation with U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin and former U.S. Rep. Barney Frank on the legislative and societal challenges and victories that helped shape the long struggle for LGBTQ rights.

In December 2018, the Newseum also hosted “Rise Up: A Conversation with Judy and Dennis Shepard,” a discussion where the couple showcased the Matthew Shepard Foundation and shared their 20-year journey of advocating for LGBTQ acceptance.

“Rise Up” will be on display through Dec. 31, 2019.
