In celebration of the opening of its newest exhibit “Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement,” the Newseum partnered with Hamilton Hotel and actor and activist Alan Cumming to launch “The Newsroom: Rise Up” suite. The “Rise Up” exhibit, which is highlighted throughout the suite, explores the modern gay rights movement in the United States and marks the 50th anniversary of the June 1969 police raid of the New York’s Stonewall Inn that galvanized the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

Award-winning actor, singer, producer, director and activist Alan Cumming curated this signature suite, thoughtfully selecting artifacts and images from the exhibit that showcase key moments in the ongoing fight for LGBTQ civil rights. The suite features front-page news and pivotal cover stories in addition to news-driven amenities. “The Newsroom: Rise Up” suite also displays powerful pop culture artifacts from TV, music and sports.

“Guests of Hamilton Hotel will get a stylish sneak peak at the historic moments of the LGBTQ rights movement they will see depicted in the Newseum’s exhibit,” said Patty Rhule, vice presidents of exhibits and content at the Newseum. “We are excited about this partnership that allows us to extend our mission to increase understanding about the free press and the First Amendment.”

The “Rise Up” exhibit includes a yearlong program series at the Newseum featuring those who have led the fight for LGBTQ equality. On March 18, the Newseum hosted “Rise Up: An Evening with Alan Cumming,” where he discussed the role of popular culture in the modern gay rights movement. Watch the program, moderated by NPR’s Ari Shapiro, here.
