Director of Foundation Relations

Job Type: Full time

Location: Washington, DC


Reporting to the Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer, the Director of Foundation Relations is responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting foundations to become supporters of the Newseum and its affiliated entities.


  • In partnership with development team, build and advance a pipeline of 100+ foundation donors, prospects and potential prospects.
  • Serve as the gift officer for foundation donors, maintaining a rigorous schedule of contacts both regionally and nationally.
  • Develop highly competitive proposals for foundation prospects and leverage foundation goals to mirror Newseum goals; collaborate with programmatic and exhibit leadership to ensure internal consensus on priority projects and targeted needs.
  • Monitor proposal deadlines, prepare and edit proposals, and manage proposal submissions.
  • Work with the Donor Relations Coordinator to ensure quality stewardship for current and past foundation donors.
  • Working with Newseum management and staff, create opportunities to build awareness of the Newseum’s mission and its current and planned exhibits, especially those most likely to tie in with the interests of current and prospective donors
  • Other duties related to the goals of the Development Department as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with a minimum of five years of development experience
  • Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies and techniques, particularly in the area of foundation relations
  • Demonstrated record of success in generating commitments from foundations at the six- and seven-figure levels
  • Demonstrated ability in grant and proposal writing at appropriate levels for varied proposal development
  • Demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for diverse number of projects and to complete them in a timely manner with limited supervision
  • Ability to maintain a high level of poise, reflecting the highest standards of professional conduct and integrity in all circumstances
  • Ability to travel regionally and nationally to cultivate and solicit foundation support
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • A work ethic that is self-motivated, reliable and detail-oriented
  • Excellent computer skills; Raiser’s Edge experience preferred
  • A passion for the First Amendment
