Volunteer Program Internship

Job Type: Internship (Unpaid)

Location: Washington, DC


The intern will assist the Education Department with the implementation and organization of the program's 75 volunteers, which include guides, administrative and special event volunteers. He/she will be required to adhere to Education Department practices and procedures.


Including but not limited to:

  • Assist with the implementation and organization of the program's recruitment plan, including posting and maintaining online ads and writing volunteer profiles
  • Research new trends in volunteer recruitment and suggest recruitment campaign tactics
  • Research volunteer scheduling systems and suggest ways to leverage existing tools
  • Assist with volunteer recognition, including but not limited to coordinating events with guest speakers, arranging tickets for special events, writing letters and creating certificates
  • Handle clerical tasks for the Volunteer program, including working with spreadsheets and the digitizing of records
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Interest in volunteer management or museums
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work effectively in a diverse and fast-paced team environment
  • Mature judgment, discretion and professionalism in communicating information
  • Interns must be available to work 15-20 hours per week, but scheduling is flexible.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or possess unrestricted work authorization documentation
