Joe Urschel

Executive director emeritus/Newseum

Joe Urschel is executive director emeritus of the Newseum, the interactive museum of news which opened April 11, 2008, in Washington, D.C. He led the team of news and museum professionals that spent six years developing content — exhibitions, video, interactive productions — and services for the seven-level, 250,000-square-foot museum.

Urschel previously served as executive director and senior vice president. He was named executive director in June 1997, just two months after the original Newseum opened in Arlington, Va. From 1997 until the Newseum closed in March 2002, museum attendance grew from 414,000 in its first full year of operation to more than 482,000 visitors in 2001. In less than five years of operation in Arlington, the Newseum welcomed more than 2.25 million visitors.
