NEWSPAPERS:
East:
Newspapers are the written voice of the state. Reporters do not
launch independent investigations or expose government corruption.
Journalists are more like secretaries, reporting what they are told
and nothing more.
All East German newspapers, even the growing youth and trade union
papers, are used "to direct the thinking of the people into correct
political lines."
West:
The American military moves quickly to establish a free press model.
On Oct. 18, 1945, they establish Neue Zeitung in the American sector.
Newspaper operation licenses are issued to groups that can show
they are anti-Nazi. In West Berlin, nearly 20 papers are in operation.
A variety of news begins to flow.
