RADIO:
East:
It's
Sunday, Aug. 13, in the early morning hours. East German soldiers
quietly seal off the border with barbed wire. Guards are posted.
East German radio doesn't say a word.
By Sunday afternoon, East German radio broadcasts reports of citizens
who say they are grateful to be protected from the criminals in
the West. Border guards are taking "measures" to do that. What the
radio doesn't say: the "measures" are orders for East German soldiers
to take aim at any citizens trying to flee the republic, and shoot
to kill.
West: By 4 a.m., Radio
in the American Sector reports that barbed wire fences are sealing
off the border, and that Soviet tanks have rolled into East Berlin.
