SHOT
AT THE WALL:

On Aug.
17, 1962, Peter Fechter, an 18-year-old bricklayer, tries to jump
the wall. East German soldiers fire. Fechter falls. The East Germans
will not allow anyone to help Fechter as he bleeds to death. Fechter,
the wall's 50th casualty, becomes a symbol of all those slain at
the Berlin Wall. Wreaths and crosses memorialize his death.
