Biologists James Watson and Francis Crick discover the structure of DNA (the acid that transmits genetic characteristics) is a "double helix polymer." It looks like a twisted rope-ladder. This discovery -- along with earlier studies that demonstrate that DNA is the most basic genetic material -- leads to new medical technologies and ethical controversies over genetic engineering.
