The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the nation's leading civil rights crusader, is assassinated April 4 while standing on a second-floor motel balcony in Memphis, Tenn. White ex-convict James Earl Ray is charged with the murder. The assassination is followed by rioting in more than 100 U.S. cities, including the nation's capital. Ray is convicted and is sentenced to 99 years in prison.
