Both Mao's and Chiang's forces initially race to control Japanese occupied portions of China, but rampant inflation and Nationalist government corruption result in the defection, surrender and capture of large segments of the Nationalist army. Mao establishes the People's Republic of China on the mainland; Chiang sets up the Republic of China on Taiwan.
