Three scientists from AT&T's Bell Laboratories publicly display their invention -- the transistor. William Shockley, Walter Bratton and John Bardeen win the Nobel Prize for physics in 1956 because of their work. The tiny transistor replaces vacuum tubes and becomes the basic component of modern electronics.
