"unsinkable" British steamship Titanic, the largest oceanliner in
the world, strikes an iceberg and sinks in the North Atlantic on
its maiden voyage. More than 1,500 drown. The ship was sailing from
Southampton, England, to New York. The vessel carries lifeboats
for 1,100 passengers. There are 2,200 people on board.
