Charles David "Doc" Herrold establishes the first regular broadcast station using a primitive microphone and a tall antennae on the roof of the Garden City Bank Building in San Jose, Calif. Herrold also begins the Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless. Few have receivers but the quality of signal often is surprising. By 1912, signals from multiple transmitters are mixing, so much so that Congress enacts the Radio Act to license voice transmitters.
