"We
hereby proclaim the establishment of the Jewish state of Palestine,
to be called Israel," says David Ben-Gurion, prime minister of the
new nation, May 14. Israel is born, under a United Nations declaration,
with expiration of the mandate Britain has had since 1917. Jewish
people have a country for the first time in 1,878 years. The United
States immediately grants recognition; the Soviet Union soon follows.
