In
1959 engineer Jack Kilby and physicist Robert Noyce separately seek
patents for the first computer chips, pioneering an era of tiny
electronic devices. Kilby, who applies in January, is working on
germanium chips. Noyce, who files in July, devises easier-to-produce
silicon chips. After years of lawsuits, they join forces, becoming
co-inventors of "the chip."
