Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, brother of the late President John F. Kennedy, is assassinated in California while campaigning for the the Democratic nomination for president. Kennedy is shot June 5 in a Los Angeles hotel by Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian who immigrated to the U.S. from Jordan. Sirhan is convicted and sentenced to life in prison. It's the year's second political assassination. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is killed in April in Memphis, Tenn.
