Navy Cmdr. Alan Shepard rockets 115 miles into space aboard his cramped Mercury capsule Freedom 7 -- the first American into space. His May 5 flight begins at Cape Canaveral, Fla., and ends safely 302 miles out to sea after a 15 minute flight. Says Shepard after being picked up by helicopter: "Boy, what a ride!"
