The
United Nations is born. Eleanor Roosevelt becomes the first U.N.
representative from the United States. The United Nations meets
for the first time in the United States on Oct. 23, 1946. After
an initial session in London, U.N. members find a permanent home
in New York City. President Truman addresses the meeting in the
borough of Queens. He expresses hope the world body will help bring
peace.
