It is two in the morning in Berlin on Sunday Aug. 13, 1961, when the East German police and army begin blocking access to the western parts of Berlin -- first with barbed wire and barricades. Two days later they begin to build a wall. By Sept. 20, a wall 12.5 miles long has been erected.
