seven crew members of the Challenger die when the space shuttle
explodes 74 seconds after its Jan. 28 launch from Cape Canaveral,
Fla. Among them: Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space.
NASA scientists would say later that cold weather caused the failure
of "o rings" between the rocket's booster segments. That failure
allowed exhaust gases to leak and then explode.
