After World War II, Korea is divided at the 38th parallel into a Soviet zone and a U.S. zone. In 1948, each of these zones proclaims itself an independent state. Communist North Korea attacks South Korea on June 25, 1950. The United States, operating with the United Nations, rushes to the defense of South Korea. China comes in to help North Korea . An armistice is signed July 27, 1953.
