The United States officially enters World War I on April 6, 1917. U.S. "doughboys" land in France on June 27 -- the first American troops to join the Anglo-French alliance fighting World War I. Maj. Gen. John "Black Jack" Pershing, a highly decorated Army officer, commands the first group of U.S. Marines. The Americans remain independent of Anglo-French command.
