Premier Nikita Khrushchev tried to prevent East Berliners
from leaving, saying they needed protection from Western capitalists.
EXPLANATION:
By
1961, more than 3 million people had fled East Germany. The
communist government tried to stop the mass departures by
building the Berlin Wall. Khrushchev also stated that he wanted
to protect East Germans from nearby Western governments.
