The
Future of the Space Program
NASA
has many plans for continued space exploration. Scientists are continuing
to develop more powerful spacecrafts. Plans for building an international
space station with Russia and Europe are underway. NASA is considering
establishing permanent bases on the moon and on Mars. Other scientists
want to manufacture products in space, like metals. Some think it
is important to develop technology to detect asteroids that might
hit the Earth. Finally, others dream about making Mars a habitable
planet. If the surface temperature were a little warmer, perhaps
people could live on Mars.
What do you think are the benefits and drawbacks of the space program
today? Some people think the space program is too expensive and
should be cut back. They argue that the United States should spend
more money on services like education and health care. Others think
that exploring the universe is a good investment in the future.
They also argue that new technologies, created for space, have been
used to solve other problems on Earth.
Think about the pros and cons of the space program. You can research
the issues at the library or on the Internet. Discuss the topic
with your classmates. After visiting the Newseum, you can have an
informed debate.
