The annual Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference program targets rising high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism and who demonstrate qualities of “free spirit.”
Students will come to Washington, D.C. to participate in an all-expenses-paid journalism conference at the Newseum, and are awarded a $1,000 college scholarship. This program began in 1999 and is funded by the Freedom Forum Institute to honor Al Neuharth, the founder of USA TODAY, Newseum and the Freedom Forum.

Following a screening of the Newseum’s “Freedom Rides” documentary, students will take park in a discussion with Freedom Riders Joan Trumpauer Mulholland and Dr. Ernest “Rip” Patton moderated by former Newseum producer Frank Bond.
