To mark the 150th anniversary of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, author and historian James Swanson looks back at the event that shocked the nation.
Swanson is the author of the New York Times best-seller “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer” and its sequel, “Bloody Crimes: The Chase for Jefferson Davis and the Death Pageant for Lincoln’s Corpse.” Born on Lincoln’s birthday, Swanson has written about history and popular culture for a variety of publications, including The Wall Street Journal, American Heritage, Smithsonian and the Los Angeles Times.
The Newseum’s newest exhibit, “President Lincoln Is Dead: The New York Herald Reports the Assassination,” brings together an unparalleled collection of all seven editions of the Herald from April 15, 1865, the day Lincoln died, chronicling the crime of the century.
