Rise Up: A Conversation With Judy and Dennis Shepard @ Walter and Leonore Annenberg Theater | Washington | District of Columbia | United States

To mark the 20th anniversary of the launch of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, Judy and Dennis Shepard talk about the organization which honors their son, Matthew, whose tragic murder in 1998 brought national attention to hate crimes.

The Shepards will share their 20-year journey of advocating for LGBTQ acceptance and their successful activism that resulted in legislation expanding federal hate crime law. They will also discuss their continuing efforts in providing a voice and support for LGBTQ youth and the importance of standing up for the community.

Jonathan Capehart, Washington Post opinion writer and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, will moderate the conversation.

The program is the latest in a series of events leading up to the 50th anniversary of the June 1969 police raid of New York’s Stonewall Inn and the protests that inspired the modern gay liberation movement.

In March 2019, the Newseum will open its new exhibit, “Rise Up: Stonewall and the LGBTQ Rights Movement,” which will explore how activists have used their First Amendment freedoms to fight for an end to discrimination.

A VIP reception will be hosted before the program for Friends of the First Amendment Society and Corporate Engagement Program members. To learn how you can join this VIP function, please contact Cecelia Cizek at 202/292-6557 or ccizek@newseum.org.
