Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) and former Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) appear together for a conversation on legislative and societal challenges and victories that helped shape the long struggle for LGBTQ rights.

Baldwin was elected to the Senate in 2012 and made history as Wisconsin’s first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate and the first openly gay member elected to Senate. Frank served as a congressman from 1981-2013. In 1987, he became the first member of Congress to voluntarily acknowledge that he is gay and, in 2012, became the first member of Congress to marry his same-sex partner.

Joshua Johnson, host of NPR’s daily program “1A,” will moderate the conversation.

The program marks the launch of a series of events leading up to the 50th anniversary of the June, 1969 police raid of the Stonewall Inn and the protests that inspired the modern gay liberation movement. In March, 2019, the Newseum will open its new exhibit, “Rise Up: Stonewall and the Gay Rights Movement” which will explore how activists have used their First Amendment freedoms to fight for an end to discrimination.

Following the program, Frank will sign copies of his 2015 memoir, “Frank: A Life in Politics from the Great Society to Same-Sex Marriage” which will be made available for purchase.

A VIP reception will be hosted before the program for Friends of the First Amendment Society and Corporate Engagement Program members. To learn how you can attend this VIP function, please contact Cecelia Cizek at 202/292-6557, or ccizek@newseum.org.
