World Press Freedom Day 2018 @ Newseum | Washington | District of Columbia | United States

Every year, May 3 is celebrated worldwide as World Press Freedom Day to remind citizens and governments of the importance of a free and fair press and to honor journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Press freedom is precarious, and journalists across the globe are facing mounting restrictions on the free flow of news as well as unprecedented threats. Just this week, nine journalists responding to a suicide bombing in Afghanistan were targeted and killed by terrorists.

It’s not just authoritarian regimes cracking down. Democracies — including the United States — are increasingly restricting journalists’ ability to report the facts.

The Newseum’s mission is to increase public understanding of the critical role of a free press.
