The Birmingham News

The Birmingham News — June 11, 1963 Readable PDF

Interest in the University of Alabama does not relent as the week goes on. For two days, The Birmingham News uses the story for its front page. On June 11 the headline reads, "Alabama Guard Federalized as Wallace Stands at Door." Only one photo runs on the page showing Gov. Wallace reading a proclamation to Deputy U.S. Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach. The News does print several informative news briefs, including "U.S. to force registration of two today," "JFK briefs GOP on civil rights plan" and "Wallace statement brings up question of constitutionality." As a whole, the page represented the frantic actions integrationists and segregationists took to put an end to the Alabama standoff.
