THE AMERICAN PUBLIC FINALLY ACCEPT THE HORRORS

April 1945: American troops liberate concentration camps, including those at Buchenwald and Dachau. Americans are shocked when they finally see the gruesome photographs and film of the concentration camps. Many hear a moving report from respected CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow about the scene at Buchenwald. Allied Commander General Eisenhower summons the nation’s top editors and publishers to see the camps for themselves. Included in the group is Julius Ochs Adler, vice- president of The New York Times. His account of Buchenwald runs on page six.
