ARGENTINA
Kidnapped May 18 while walking down a street in Buenos Aires. He was never seen again. Ascone was 29 and wrote about the economy for his daily newspaper and the magazine Competencia. "He always said he wanted a better world for his daughters than the one in which he lived," said his former wife, Ana Maria Abelleira. "His fight was for this. He firmly believed in what he did." During the military regime of 1976 to 1983, thousands of Argentines, including journalists, were imprisoned, tortured and killed without trial. Many have never been found; they are called “the disappeared ones.”
