His body, handcuffed and charred, was found Jan. 25 in a cellar near the beach resort of Pinamar. He had been shot twice in the head. The 35-year-old magazine news photographer had recently photographed reclusive Argentine businessman Alfredo Yabran, accused of having Mafia ties. Yabran committed suicide in May 1998 after a judge ordered his arrest in connection with Cabezas' death. Cabezas' murder touched off a national outcry. Said one Noticias colleague: "They have left a time bomb in [our] newsrooms." In December 2002, a former provincial police chief was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the murder.
