Shot by unidentified assailants Aug. 30 as he was riding home in a rickshaw near the town of Jessore. He was editor of the Bengali-language daily newspaper which had recently published a series of articles denouncing outlawed Maoist guerrillas operating near Jessore. His father, the newspaper's founder, was arrested and died while in custody in 1983.
