NORBERT  ZONGO

News Organization: L’INDEPENDANT

Died: 1998

Location: BURKINA FASO

Found dead Dec. 13 inside the wreckage of his burned and bullet-riddled car. His body was discovered between Sapouy and the capital city of Ouagadougou, along with the bodies of three companions. Zongo, publisher and editor-in-chief of his private weekly newspaper, had received death threats and was a well-known critic of the government. His death brought thousands of chanting demonstrators into the streets of the capital. An independent commission tied Zongo's murder to his investigation of the torture and death of a personal employee of the president's brother.
