Died: 1998

Drowned Sept. 23 on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Fla., while reporting a news story. Bartlett, who could not swim, was investigating the impact of a fishing-net ban when the boat she was in made a sharp turn, throwing her overboard. The 24-year-old had removed her life jacket to tape a segment of her story. The pilot of the boat, Willie Simmons, also drowned. Bartlett, a Florida native, had earned a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University.
