Killed May 27 while covering fighting between Abkhazi rebels and Georgian troops near Gali in the breakaway region of Abkhazia. He was only identified by personal documents found on his mutilated body. Born in the Gali region, Chanya had worked as a journalist for the independent Georgian daily newspaper Resonants since 1996. He was 28 and married with two children.
