Died of pneumonia Feb. 9 after spending almost one year in prison. He wrote for the independent newspaper Agiere and was editor-in-chief of the now-defunct publication Welafen. Hailu was arrested for his articles about the threat of Islamic fundamentalism in Addis Ababa. He could not meet the terms of his bail and remained in prison, where a lung problem went untreated. Hailu was admitted to a hospital five days before he died.
