Shot in March as he was driving home from work. The 30-year-old columnist was highly critical of the human rights abuses of then-President Joaquin Balaguer. Three former army generals and three civilians were charged with the murder that was carried out as "payback" for Martinez's constant criticism of Balaguer. In 2000, four men, including a retired general, each were sentenced to 30 years in prison for the killing.
