Died of shrapnel wounds Oct. 28 in Grozny. He had gone to cover Russia’s bombing of an outdoor market the previous night when he was hit during another round of rocket attacks. Ependiyev died of his wounds in a hospital. A veteran correspondent for his independent Chechnya weekly, he was one of two correspondents who remained in Grozny to cover the Russian military campaign.
