ABDULAI JUMAH JALLOH

News Organization: AFRICAN CHAMPION

Died: 1999

Location: SIERRA LEONE

Executed at point-blank range Feb. 3 near State House in central Freetown. He and his editor were on their way to their independent newspaper’s printing plant when a Sierra Leone army officer stopped them, claiming Jalloh owed him money. The officer then spoke to a group of West African Peacekeeping Force soldiers, who in turn informed Jalloh that he’d been identified as a Revolutionary United Front rebel. Despite his protestations, including showing his press identification card, Jalloh was shot by an unidentified soldier.
