Killed at an election rally after a suicide bomb aimed at President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga exploded Dec. 18 in Colombo. He was one of 22 killed in the blast for which separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam were blamed. Cooray and his colleague Indika Pathinivasan were waiting in an area cordoned off for journalists when they were killed. The president was injured in the attack.
