Cazuza, a journalist with Radio Xingo FM in Caninde de Sao Francisco, was shotgunned to death March 13 after leaving a party. Cazuza had been a persistent critic of the local mayor, accusing him on a daily basis of corruption and malfeasance. According to the magazine "ISTOÉ," the mayor had threatened publicly to kill Cazuza. Two days after the murder, police arrested a man who said the mayor had paid him about $1,500 to kill Cazuza.
