Murdered in an ambush as he left the offices of his daily fax newsletter "Metical," in Polana, a suburb of the capital city, Maputo. On Nov. 22, two vehicles cut off Cardoso's car, which then was riddled with gunfire from AK-47 assault rifles. Cardoso was killed instantly; his driver was seriously wounded. The 48-year-old journalist was well known in Mozambique for his investigations of political corruption and organized crime. In the weeks before his death, Cardoso had taken on a faction within the government's ruling party and reported allegations of irregularities at a leading bank.
