Assaulted near his home on May 12, Domnikov, 42, died of his injuries -- hammer blows to the head -- on July 16. Initial inquiries indicated that the culture and education reporter for the semiweekly may have been mistaken for colleague Oleg Sultanov, to whom Domnikov bore a resemblance. Sultanov, an investigative reporter, lived in the same building. Editor Sergei Sokolov said later, however, that police had established that "Domnikov was attacked [because of] his professional activity" or as a result of the newspaper's reports. Novaya Gazeta specializes in investigative reporting, often focusing on government corruption.
